I seek to guide students along the path of individual discovery and ownership by moving from the known to the unknown. I link the unknown to the known by “looping back,” a teaching technique that grounds new information to that which has been experienced previously. Concepts remain consistent throughout class, and students embody these concepts more fully as class progresses. Through use of rich imagery and thought-provoking metaphors, life principles are discovered in tandem with principles of dance technique, composition or improvisation.
In technique class, students experience a logical progression of technical principles experienced through warm-up, center and across-the-floor sequences, improvisation, and ultimately, a performed sequence reflecting the culmination of learned material. Movement is a blend of classical and contemporary techniques, with primary focus given to movement efficiency and performance intent. Students discover the exhilarating ride of momentum through full-bodied, fluid movement.
dissolving religious and cultural barriers through the art of dance
My teaching philosophy stems from a core belief system: I believe in the innate worth of each individual. I believe in the divine nature of the human family. I believe in the cosmic implications of the creative process. Within this framework, dance serves to cultivate, reflect and validate individual identity, project and redefine patterns of social interaction, and lead us collectively towards a more profound appreciation of our potential as creative beings.
